110 Year Old Bike

My wife and I were out for a Sunday afternoon stroll around Chorlton Water Park near Manchester when we bumped into this elderly gentleman with his bike. This was no ordinary bike! The drive shaft immediately caught my eye and I realised that this was old. We got talking along with a small crowd which had gathered and asked a few questions. Well its 110 years old and 45lbs weight. The drive shaft is protected by a brass covers front and rear and was itself the right chainstay. The pump was also made of brass. Rims are steel and needed some renovation as corrosion meant that the spokes were pulling through. At the front is a very interesting French made lamp with and candle for illumination! The hubs had a lubrication port in the centre and the front brake was a piece of metal which pushed down onto the front tyre from the stearer tube! It was incredible to see this vintage bike still being used!! The man belonged to the Vintage Cycle Club.

The drive shaft is something else! I can't believe it still works.

on the other hand it's amazing to see how some parts of a bike haven't changed until nowadays !

I know Eric. The classic bike configuration is virtually unchanged.

Way too nifty! Wonder what my 15 year old Trek 860 will look like in another 95 years??
