Winter cycling (and picnic) in the forest of Les Landes, SW FranceIn my french home town, Agen, there is a friendly cycling club, with members of all ages and all levels, a strong "socializing" background, and good-living atmosphere.
They regularly go for trips of all sorts everywhere during the high season, and take part to all local events such as rallyes and races. With, often, some wine bottles hidden here and there, to make the fun complete till the end.
In winter, when all neighbouring hills are muddy, and ruts filled with water, making MB a burden, they gather every sunday morning some 40km far to the west, at the limit of France's largest forest, Les Landes: a region of flat and huge pines forests and sandy ground, strewn with square-shaped trails networks (mostly for forestry and firemen access), which, by wet weather, makes a very decent surface and nice area to train.
After and before the ride, they all gather into a house at Tustem to drink the "aperitif". From time to time, they also organize some sort of rallyes, accompanied with picnics. The area is also the terrain of local hunters, with who, despite some divergences about their respective activities, share the same friendship and conviviality.
I used to go from time to time to these rides, I miss a bit this kind of atmosphere...
