UPDATE: South Island Mountain Bike Society has recently released a new map for Hartland! Get it at your Victoria local bike shops!

In 1997, the Capital Regional District (CRD), in cooperation with the South Island Mountain Bike Society (SIMBS), created Mount Work-Hartland, a 197 hecatare mountain bike park on the slops of Mount Work. Mount Work-Hartland is located about a twenty minute drive from downtown Victoria. The Hartland Road Mountain Bike Park is the first CRD park, and only legal area on southern Vancouver Island, to open itself to real mountain biking. The park is adjacent to the Hartland Landfill (possibly the most innovatively managed in BC, you do not even notice it really). The bike park contains a terrain training area and trails ranging from rolling, smooth fire roads to triple black diamond downhill trails. The paved parking area off of Hartland Road also has 2 washrooms with flush toilets and a bike wash area. Maps are available for $5 from most local bike shops in the area.

Trails/Riding

Lookout Point on Snakes and Ladders
Hartland Bike Park is a versatile area with riding for everyone. The Regional Trail and fire roads (Emergency One and Two) are easy enough that anyone can do them while at the other end of the spectrum there are triple black diamond downhill trails to suit even the most experienced riders. Hartland is laid out with fire roads that get you quickly around the park and to the higher elevation areas. You can ascend the green trails and then descend the more difficult trails. Although most of the trails are listed as point to point, with a map you can always plan loops to take you back to your car (no need to shuttle).

The riding at Hartland is a good mix of downhill, cross country and all mountain. There is a lot of rock due to the nature of the area. It makes for interesting and quite technical riding in places. Many of the rides can be done in both directions, meanning you have to climb some sections on some trails regardless of which direction you take it in.

There is also a small bike park with a few small jumps and drops as well as obstacles such as a teeter totter. It is located by the small information kiosk just within the park (not the kiosk at the parking lot).

A very good park map is available for $5 at most local bike stores in the Greater Victoria area. Maps are also posted on the boards at the information kiosks at the parking lot and technical terrain area.

Red Tape

Riding on Centerfold
No registration or fees are required to ride at Hartland Bike Park. If you wish to hold a clinic or competition, you are required to register (and pay) the South Island Mountain Bike Society. They can be contacted for rates and dates.

Many of the trails at Hartland Bike Park are multi use trails. Cyclists are required to yield to horse riders and hikers on the trails.

The Southern end of the park is on private property. At present they seem to be trying to deter riders (obstacles over trail). The trails are not well maintained in that area at present. There is also a small logging operation taking place.

When To Ride

End of Shock Treatment
Due to Victoria's mild climate it is possible to ride at Hartland year round. In fall and winter there may be wet leaves and mud on the trails although the rocky nature of many of the trails means they are not too muddy. The few days a year it snows in Victoria could make the trails unrideable (use your discretion).

Trail Maintenance

The South Island Mountain Bike Society runs trail maintenance days on the third Sunday of each month at 8:45 am. Help to build new trails and maintain current ones. Free lunch if you email in by the prior Thursday and there are prize draws at each maintenance day. More info atSIMBS Trail Maintenance Day.

Camping

No camping is permitted at Hartland Bike Park.
