There are several MTB regions in the Lake Tahoe area, the East Side being one of the most popular. The network of trails between the Mt.Rose Highway and Spooner Summit offers an immense array of possibilities, from all-day'ers to rides lasting less than 2 hours.
Much of this trail network lies within the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, and the easy accessibility makes the area a local favorite for the populated regions of Reno/Sparks and Carson City/Minden.
Most of the trails are at or above 7000ft, allowing riding only in the warmer seasons due to snow.Getting ThereThe most popular point of access for this trail network is the Spooner Lake entrance to the State Park, just north of U.S. Highway 50 on State Route 28. From here you can do out-and-backs, loops, and car shuttles to your heart's content.
Other access points include: Tunnel Creek, Mt.Rose Meadows, Washoe Valley, and Carson City.
Red TapeTypical of the Lake Tahoe area, there are several different groups/agencies that take responsibility for trail maintenance and regulation. Depending on the trail, there are different sets of rules and guidelines to adhere to.
The State Park system limits MTB speed to 20mph, with 5mph required on curves. The Tahoe Rim Trail sections are regulated, with some sections prohibiting cycles and others only allowing cycles on specific days. Pay attention to signage, and watch out for other recreationalists. Downhills off the east side are free of MTB-specific regulation, as far as I know.
Parking fees at the Spooner entrance are a modest $6.
