Overview

The Peak District is an upland area in central and northern England, lying mainly in northern Derbyshire, but also covering parts of Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, and South and West Yorkshire.

The Peak District was designated a National Park in 1951 making it the earliest national park in the British Isles. It is split into two areas the northern Dark Peak and the Southern White Peak. The Dark Peak is where most of the moorland is located and has gritstone geology. The White Peak is where most of the population lives and where the geology is largely limestone. It the most visited national park in the UK because of its proximity to the major conurbations of the Midlands, Yorkshire and Lancashire. Easy of access by road and rail make it the second most visited nation park in the world.

Getting There

The Peak District is located in the North West of England between Manchester and Sheffield as shown on this map.

Mountain Biking

There are loads of places to bike in the Peak District. It is worth making sure that your bike is in top notch condition as the gritty terrain will find out any weaknesses in your equipment.
