Overview

Few kilometers behind the mediterranean seaside start the first meridional hillsides of the french Massif Central.

This area is very similar to the landscapes one can find in Provence or in the pre-Alps, the whole area being made of karstic ranges and bush vegetation.

This is a great hiking area, and, not being made of very high mountains as well as strewn with forest trails into the guarrigue, a very fine cycling area.

Most of the pictures I attached are from the surroundings of the Pic Saint Loup, 658m , the highest peak of the surroundings, topped with a ruin of an ancient castle. Many amators of modelling come to this place to pilot their gliders. The place is forbidden to cars, despite land rovers would make it (and then you, by bike).

I also attached some other pictures of two of the most picturesques villages of the region, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (www.saint-guilhem-le-desert.com) and Saint-Martin-de-Londres (www.saintmartindelondres.com), the first of the two being in the UNESCO list.

More popular trails (but hiking trails, you'll need to sort those which can be really cycled) on this webpage:

At least it can serve as a source of insiration to find some other fine places in the region, and, if you have some maps, imagine your own circuits.

Getting There

Fly to Montpellier (served with Ryanair).

Red Tape

Some trails might be subject to specific regulations. Beware of not disturbing walkers on popular trails when going down fast.
