In 1997, as I was a student in Tarbes (near the Pyrenees) the cycling club of the uni organized a week-end in the Bardenas.
Bardenas Reales is a semi-desertic area located on the very southern end of the Spannish Pyrenees, South from Pamplona, near the city of Tudela.
As it was now more than 10 years ago, and I was following the organisators, I am completely unable to tell you exactly where we cycled. I just can tell you by memory that cycling routes are repertoried in some guides, and for some of them marked. I also remember we did the n°5 and the n°8 during these two days. Any contribution from spannish MB/SP members will be appeciated !
The landscape of the Bardenas Reales is not natural. It results from an intense deforestation stated centuries ago, and a very erodable ground made of sandstone and other fragile rocks. Rain and weather sculpted the landscapes we see today. Bardenas Reales also host many artificial lakes and are, I heard, a good place to grow rice, like in China !
And finally, for the story, because you surely noticed how these landscapes are reminiscent of those in the deserts of USA, that in Bardenas Reales were produced many American Westerns, made in Europe, for understandable budget reasons ... For example most of the scenes of "Once Upon a Time in the West" were made here, while some famous shots of the american deserts were really made in USA.
