Bike Ride to Snohomish
This trip took place in April 2009 on a warm sunny day. I been in the mood for an adventure for a while, and had no way of getting any hikes in, so I thought with such a nice day why don't I go for a bike ride. My friend Sean wanted in on this idea and decided to join me. The total distance gained was 35 miles with some hills here and there. I was acually not certain of where I wanted to go, perhaps the Snohomish bike trails but really that was an excuse to get out, the main point was for an adventure. I also was testing an idea I been wanting to do for a long time, if some day I was to acually bike to the mountains I would have to have a route, and there happens to be rivers that cut across the county with few bridges and some are illegal for bikers to go across. This was an entry point to see if my trip Into the Mountains was even possible without having something blocking the way, this trip took place before my 140 bike ride trip. To my luck I did find a way.We get a late start from home at around 10:00 a.m. but better late than never as I say. As we bike through Everett it's always neat that even from the city you can see the mountains. As we bike part of my gear shifter bends (to this day it is still bent which is why I cannot switch the gears). Fortunatly it was not serious although I could not turn into certain gears. On the way to Snohomish we came to a water fall which was a nice place to stop. After this we continued on to Highway 9. There was some construction going on so we had to get special permission to go through the construction zone. By now the day was very hot and we were starting to get a bit of a sun burn.
At the bridge it was slow going because we would have to get off of our bikes and walk it on a narrow path with cars speeding 60 or so miles an hour past us. Often there would be wind, dust and sometimes rocks picked up from the cars and the dust would hurt my eyes, and I believe one person gave us a loud honk. Once past this part we biked a few more miles until I some how slipped on my bike and fell off. Fortunatly I was going at a slow speed but had a grill mark looking cut on my leg (to this day the scare is still there). We decided to call it quits here because it was late in the day and we head over to a gas station for water and to wash off my cuts.
After I exit the door of the gas station this one guy talks to us, seems nice, but after he looks away my friend whispers to me "he's got a gun" but I know better what to do in situations like these, don't just pretent to be calm but be calm because your much better off. Fortunatly there was no trouble and we left the place.
The ride home was tiresome, especially because I was carrying the pack with all our gear. We had to take an alternative way back because the construction guy would not be happy with us going through his zone again. The rest of the way home was decent although we stopped at a safeway and when my friend trys to get a free cookie the lady tells him "did you get permission from your parents to have a cookie?". Give me a break were my thoughts because we ran out of food and were very hungry at this point. I'll admit, I'm pretty big on the idea of getting my free cookies, after all they say the best things in life are free. Once we got home we were tired, but this was a step that helped put my later bike trip in motion.
