dhb Wickham eVENT Waterproof Shorts

After the Gore-Tex shorts debacle I decided to try another brand. After much searching I turned to Wiggle's own brand made from eVent waterproof material. This material is used on high end waterproof garments and has a good reputation.

These seem to be much more heavy duty than Gore-Tex Paclite. All the seams are taped with some serious heavy duty material on the backside. There are stretch panels on the rear of the leg but these are again of a thicker material than Gore-Tex. There is reflective piping down the outside of each leg with an elasticated waist without a draw cord or belt. The sizing is on the small side so I would say large is medium!

Out on the trail

I have worn these in some very mucky conditions over the past six months and I have to say they are brilliant. There do not seem to be any of the weaknesses associated with a Gore-Tex Paclite because the construction is so much more substantial. I was cycling today in torrential rain which came off my jacket directly onto the shorts. I was pretty well soaked throughout but my backside was completely dry! They do the job. The reinforced backside seems to really take some abuse and the stretch panels are sturdy. My biggest worry was the lack of a draw cord or belt around the waist but these fears were not realised as the elasticated waste does not come down on riding. These are not cheap at £60 but seem like they are built to last. They are pretty basic shorts with no pockets or extras but they work effectively. We'll see how they hold up over a typical British winter! Updates to follow.

At the moment I can't fault these shorts. They do exactly what they are supposed to do - Keep the backside and nether regions dry! Worth every penny and seem durable. Only minor gripe is that they have no pockets at all. That's it.

Love these shorts. I've worn them all winter and as well as waterproof protection they provide more thermal comfort over cycling tights. They are durable well made and do the job they were designed to do!

Would I buy them again? Without doubt.
