I suspect that "El Capitan" might be the most duplicated name for peaks in North America. Except for perhaps Squaw Butte or something.

What about Heather Hill, South Peak, blabla Butte, etc etc.. SP is full of them and sometimes give the feeling they are posted again and again every week ! :))
Well, Europe has got the same issue, the names are just more ancients and the etymologies more divided by regions. But you'll find countless "Ben Dearg" in Scotland, millions of "Magura" in Poland Slovakia and Czech, and dozens of "Sarrouès" and "Tozals" in respective french and Spanish Pyrenees :)

Huh. You got me curious, so I searched for "heather" on SP. There is only one. The reason the El Capitan is so popular here is that various groups of Spanish explorers made their way through the US mountains. They weren't in communication with each other and so many different peaks ended up with the same name. I know of four El Capitans in the US and I suspect there are more.

Well I'm not so sure about US names but yes, they seem to get back again and again. Perhaps one for each of them in each state ! :)))
