Just noticed that too ! BD's picture in the forum pot by lCarreau about which bike to choose wasn't a fable ! :D
I imagine it feels almost like riding 29ers...
Since I'm commuting partly with my son to his school, I've put again the Schwalbe Big Apple tires on my hardtail, I had forgotten how much fat tires improve life on a rigid. I would be really tempted of trying such tires... how wide ?

26x4.0" tires
they are great for riding places no other bike could possibly go...about 5 psi in the tires. they are quite heavy and not the best for regular trails...but should be able to ride a lot of snow this winter!
they require a bike made for the tires...on-one out of the UK is in the process of building one for you "across the pond" folks!

what brands make them ? I guess you need a special frame for that. What's the max width a normal frame allows ? The snow thing interests me :)

i run a surly pugsley. hizzity (in most of the pics) runs a salsa mukluk.
i think most normal frames will allow about a 2.5" tire...there are some DH/FR hardtail frames that may fit 3.0"
surly now makes some 4.5" tires, i have a few on order...but be aware a fatbike tire is about $130 USD!

I saw something similar at the Moots factory in Steamboat Springs last year.

Looks like a lot of fun and expensive like you say.
