Voted 10/10 | Such a place restored to live in would suit me perfectly. Barracks for classic car and workshop, and bike store and workshop. An excellent kitchen and vegetable garden.
Such places, very interesting to visit. My play regarding military was a regular board game of "Colditz". I usually managed to elude the German guards and escape the compound. My father having taught me how ! | | Posted Aug 18, 2012 5:47 pm |

My father was a Partisan (1944-45)and the only thing they told me, is when he had to walk among the corpses of the shot by the Nazi-Fascists, to search for the body of my grandfather.
Ciao Ray.

Voted 10/10 | He escaped from the Italians, in Southern Italy - at least once a week ! The reason being that it was before the Allied invasion of Europe, and the escape would be opposition forces all the way. The escapes enabled him to find potatoes because the food was little.
During one escape, they wandered into town and found bread. Which reminds me, I must one day pay back the kind loan.
After the Allies landed in Southern Italy, the camp was abandoned and he made an escape North, but recaptured by the Germans and sent to Berlin.
A tough story that your father endured. | | Posted Aug 19, 2012 4:17 pm |

Hasn't voted | Too bad your father did not meet mine. He had a safe place, food and friendship and maybe would attend along with three momentous events: the victory of the Allies, ending the war and, most important for us, the liberation from Nazi-Fascism. | | Posted Aug 20, 2012 10:58 am |

Voted 10/10 | I have seen some accounts of POWs escaping North through Italy. They were treated very kindly, and along the arduous journey fed on wild figs, peaches and gifts from the local Italians. And also offered to sit out the remainder of the war, hidden away in the mountain villages.
Many were recaptured. It was indeed a long way home. The camps in Germany, where my father was later moved to, had more resources for escapes. Very enlightening to watch the escape films.
I went to visit the old camp in Bari, Italy. | | Posted Aug 20, 2012 4:05 pm |
