When you decide to move to a country which economy has developed in less than 10 years from an average middle-income economy to one of the top-20 economies in the world... Infrastructure still needs to catch up with that kind of growth...

Nowadays there are German migrant workers in Poland. Would've been unthinkable just a decade ago.

Right, but this is not all explanation. For me infratructures in Wroclaw are, for many years, not worse than some other cities of western Europe. Some other factors are that :
- Wroclaw is a city on many islands, and too few bridges especially east side of city.
- A star-designed city with axis running in all directions, but a big bypass partly missing (well, partly)
- The still strong tendency of some Polish people to think that going by bus or bike is for poor people, and that if you can afford it you "must" go by car just not to look ridiculous.
Another stereotype still running in many people's mind is that western Europeans are full of money, and for them it has something a bit paradoxal that a french decides to cycle in Wroclaw in winter for all reasons mentioned above :) I cycle also because I hope to show the right example of citizenship...

	Voted 10/10	When it comes down to infrastructure design, Wroclaw is very similar to my hometown, Nijmegen. The Odra is just much smaller than the Waal, and Nijmegen only has one bridge connecting the north and the main part of the city. Add to that the lack of infrastructure to the south and east, and all main roads radiating out of one roundabout in the middle of town, and one can guess what happens... What you say about Polish people seeing bicycle travel as a mode of transportation for the poor is not entirely true though, I always thought I had an expensive bike, (for Dutch standards) but in Kraków it doesn't even stand out of the ordinary. I guess Kraków is just better than Wroclaw... :-P (Most folks in Kraków say the opposite, btw) About the stereotype that Western Europeans are full of cash; a friend of mine was shocked to learn that in NL a higher percentage of the population lives below the European poverty line than in PL. 2008 figures were 11.7% against 10.5%. Of course, in 2001 that was still 8% against 23%, but nonetheless, viewing Western Europe as being significantly richer than Central Europe is becoming more nonsense by the day... I must say that I take great pride in the fact that I beat my friend Lukasz in his car on my Gary Fisher from Podgórze to Nowa Huta, a distance of around 12 kilometres... It took me 22 minutes and him 25...

	Hasn't voted	The part of the Odra which goes in the center is not the main one, the main Odra flows north from the city. But I've been in Nijmegen too, you are right, the Waal is wider. As for bikes, you are also 50% right. Wroclaw is becoming one of the richest cities (like Krakow), and bicycle speaking we are 50% in the "bicycle-needed" (poor people) and "bicycle-posh" (other wanting to show how good bike they have...) Speaking stereotypes, you are also right: no one believe me when I say there is 5% unemployment in my city !

It is a whole different style of riding! What I like is the craziness of it. Hyper-awareness takes over and just like on the mtb trails, the rider must pay attention every second of the ride or else. I love it, but do not get to enjoy it very often.
