Juneau, Alaska Overview
Juneau offers a diverse range of biking trails and dirt roads with plenty of variety within the 75 mile paved road system. Just minutes from downtown Juneau, our staple ride, the Perseverance Trail, climbs 800' over four miles and most of the climbing is within the first two. It's stiff out of the hood and highlighted by rock gardens, stream-bed cobbles, avalanches, wildlife, and waterfalls. "Alaska's First Road" is both a historical and riotous ride and offers a bit of everything for riders of all expertise.
Both the Mendenhall and Herbert glaciers are accessible on amazing X-country rides. Out at the Herbert, be sure to check out the boulder people inhabiting the area. Our racing circuit takes place between the Brotherhood Bridge and the Dredge Lake trail systems alongside Mendenhall Lake and River. Is technical descents your thing? Hike the 1400' Mt. Roberts trail up to the cross for a ride in the alpine in the heart of black bear and mtn goat terrain. Our mtn bike park is a half mile before the northerly end of the road. It is located 39 miles out on the right hand side, just beyond the yellow gate in an old lumber loading area. Jumps and drops out here scream big travel and full suspension!!
The future of the sport here is bright as trail renovations take place each year. SAGA is upgrading the 13 mile Treadwell Ditch trail tying into Fish Creek on the way to the world famous Eaglecrest Ski Area. IMBA recently stopped by and flagged Sheep Creek for a total revamp due to be completed by 2010. IMBA also worked with city officials on establishing the ski area as a future destination for summer mtn biking by 2011.
