Overview

Olympus U850 SW Camera

This is a small light camera which is advertised as shockproof and waterproof. It has 8 megapixels, 3X optical zoom, large LCD screen, tripod mount etc. The camera is powered by a small lithium ion battery and memory card is Olympus XD. It has macro capabilities, built-in flash, anti-shake, movie mode etc. The lens is shielded by a glass cover and then a metal one comes over that when it is switched off. The lens is completely protected and all zooming is internal.

Out on the trail

Being heartily sick of standard digital cameras failing due to poor weather and mud fouling the zoom mechanism, I decided to buy the Olympus U850SW. Everything on this camera is shielded from the elements. The battery housing, the USB port and the lens are all sealed so that water can't get in. If mud gets onto the lens then you just wash it under the tap! It is small enough to be packed in a pouch on a Camelback belt.

The verdict

This is a great little camera and I would buy it again. It is well made and robust. The adverts drop it in hot springs and drag it from four-wheel drives, so mountain biking shouldn't be a problem! And everything has worked well so far. The image quality is good for a compact camera. Sure you're not going win any prizes with this but then it's just a point-and-shoot camera after all. It does the job and it lasts in messy weather. Some of the knobs and buttons are very small and hard to use with a gloved hand. The anti-shake feature gives good images and I use that setting the most. When I'm out biking I don't want to be fiddling around. I just want to shoot. It automatically selects the ISO setting which can be a problem in tricky lighting, giving grainy images. At £180 it is pricey but it does the job. All the photos I've posted over the past year have been taken with his camera. I think they're okay!
