That is one large antelope! Looks like it for sure. Wouldn't want to have a run in like that, that riders pretty lucky, I imagine a lot worse could have happened.

Strewth. And we thought off-roading was safe from traffic.

I reckon the antelope saw him late and tried to jump over, but he's a big guy and didn't have the agility, like the Springbok, or Thompson's Gazelle. Their jump style is called pronking  (whoever thought of that), which is used as a warning when predators are around. Maybe they ought to call 'em rockhoppers  Next time up in the forest it'll remind me to be wary of our local deer stags.

Did you catch that stag trying mount up. Ha, ha, ha

An Englishman, an Irishman, & a Scotsman walk into a bar & ask the barman where the Welshman is.
The Barman replies, "Still in New Zealand" :D

Seems the rider saw the Antelope coming at him and tries to outrun him. Not even close.

Probably the animal was getting territorial and has crappy eyesight or some similar scenario. I've even had lions 20 - 25 meters away. You don't panic and they don't bother you. Though I felt brave cuz I was with guys with spears. Alone, I might've $hit my britches.

So what to do in a situation like that? I've been chased a few times by wildlife. Gets pretty crazy. Usually just relaxing makes it lose interest. I wonder what would've happened if the MTB had stopped?

It's often the case with wildlife, if you stay still or play dead, they may leave you alone, even if they've already attacked (or defended, from their point of view). I heard with bears and lion, you should lie face down.

I know with dogs, they sense or smell your fear. Having watched The Dog Whisperer, I walked through a pack of strays, despite their muzzles nudging me. Just gotta keep cool and show you are pack leader.
