Specialized Stumpjumper 1992

An old friend of mine asked if I wanted to have his old bike, a Specialised Stumpjumper 1992. I can't say no to a bike and knew it was going to be in pretty good condition. So I got it the other day and marvelled!! Apart from the odd spot of rust on the frame it is pretty well in immaculate condition. What blew me away was the original kit on the bike, right down to the handlebar grips! It's like being transported 17 years back! It's incredible the changes that have evolved.

Everything on the bike is as it was in 1992. The frame is Tange Prestige CroMo with Direct Drive rigid forks. The kit is XT/DX with XT push/push STI shifters which the LBS put on in to replace the standard Thumb Shifters. It has DX cantilever brakes as well (remember them!!). The rims are black anodised and pretty well unscratched on braking surface on the front! Even the tyres are in A1 condition with a little threads of rubber from the moulding still on the blocks!

My only sadness is that it is a 16.5" frame and somewhat too small for me to ride. You can't have it all!

Looks like it was ridden little-to-none. Hey, my primary MTB is my '94 TREK 850 and it gets me anywhere I want to go. It's definitely got more miles than this Specialized but still has the original rear tire. And cantilever brakes--I still count on mine to keep forward momentum under control.

Cheers Malibu. This should be pretty bombproof still. Steel always was a good metal just out of favour at the moment. It is virtually unridden over the past 17 yrs.

Very similar to my red city MB (see wroclaw in the snow album), but much, much cleaner :). Isn't it the Shimano Biopace in the middle ? :D

No its post-biopace. Not sure what I'm going to do with the bike. Might start a museum! Saw this on the net-what a great page.

Pity you don't live closer, how much approximately you would ask for it ? :)

Eric, I think it would be too small for you. It is 16.5"(42cm) frame size. What are you running now?

I am not sure but I think both the red and dark green are 18", while the blue I used to have was 19. Perhaps your bike could be the ideal one to give to a teeenager !

I like the depth of the blue paint job and the Deore componentry is cool too. It's ready for a Sunday show off ride in the park maybe, uh?

Yeah its a great bike. It really brings back the excitement of MTBing back then. Feeling totally beaten up after a ride!!! Hands killing from braking so hard. Back throbbing from the vibration up the spine. Choosing lines was critical (literally). Going over the bars more times than I care to remember! Ah the good old days :)) Yeah ride in the park sounds good!!!!!

p.s: if the size is not for me then I take only the shimano non-biopace big sprocket :)

I had one just like this while in college. Same color and size. Let me know if you ever want to get rid of it.
