Overview

Trailhead

This is one more charasteristic area that belongs to the Jura, again with high plateaux covered with forest (411m), deep valleys with pinnacle-shaped karst formations, and castles. While the Tenczyn Castle makes a fine starting point, a couple of interesting valleys (Dolina Mnikowska, Zimny Dół, Dolina Brzoskwinki) make an interesting pattern of circuit. The long cross of the Tenczyn plateau in between is possible by forestry roads, covered with asphalt but closed to cars, like the Krakowska Droga (Cracow's road, as it name says, former road), a peaceful area to ride.

However this area lies a bit in the shaddow of other more famous Jura regions. This can be explained partly by the presence of the A4 motorway and the Balice international airport, just nearby. But the region is not less wild and peaceful. Since most of the circuit is flat, it makes a fine ride in the low season.

Park on the Tenczyn Castle (sometimes spelled Tęczyn) car park in Rudno. The castle is reached via the yellow path straight from the car park but not adviseable by bike, except descending. Instead take the SW road that leads to a fine view south from the castle, then a tiny trail reaches the hill and the top of the mentionned yellow path.

Then, the ride is started on the Krakowska Droga, marked with red and green bicycle signs. Most of the forest track is asphalted, which makes a fine ride, also for road bikes.
We reach a point where the path almost meets the motorway, near a horses farm, but it heads again NE to avoid it. A steep climb reaches the top of the hill Bukowa Góra, highest point of the circuit. Then the red trail, marked for pedestrians only but suitable for mountain bikes, head south in the direction of a bridge over the motorway A4.

After the bridge, the path continues south through a forest with many junctions, watch out for the marks ! We reach the road down the valley where the Sanka river flows. The road that goes along it is nice and peaceful.
Soon after, on the right, we see a huge limestone rock, like a big pinnacle, which is the mouth of the "cold valley" (Zimny Dół). We don't take its path, but a track heading to a church just before, more convenient to cycle up. It ends into flat fields in which, turning left, we join back the red trail of the valley, which makes a fine ride down.

Back on the Sanka river road, we cycle further to reach the mouth of the "Monks valley" (Dolina Mnikowska). The start is less spectacular but as soon as we pass the car park we discover a vast clearing bordered with beautiful white pinnacles, a photogenic place. There are picnic tables and it makes a fine break. Later on, the trail goes over a couple of small wooden briges along the tiny stream, into something like a narrow gorge, and ends suddenly back to the road.

We cycle north to reach a valley named Wąwóz Połrzecki, with a blue trail. A steep climb in the end leads to the motorway, along which we go for a while before finding a passage under a bridge. A bit of road takes us at the entrace of the "Peaches valley" (Dolina Brzoskwinki), another valley with white pinnacles, especially on the right. It ends in the eponym village Brzoskwinia.

The bicyle marked trail takes us on the hill north of the village (beware of dogs !), and then to a junction we saw earlier, back to the Krakowska Droga path, which takes us back to the starting point. Some variants can be made via other tracks in the forest.

Despite the zone is near the A4 motorway, paradoxally taking this road is not the best way to reach it, for the simple reason there is no convenient exit. The road 79 is the best to reach either Krzeszowice from Cracow, or Trzebinia from the Upper Silesia region.
