This album reminds me of when the Winter Olympics were hosted here in Salt Lake in 2002. It was a pretty big deal for Salt Lake then. I remember huge highway renovations in anticipation for the Olympics several years before it arrived. The Olympic Oval, mainly for the speed skating events, is less than a mile from my house. Big Place. When looking at it from Google Earth, you can see the olympic five ring symbol on the top of it.
This is my first experience of an Olympic buildup. The whole country has pulled together, with streets lined with flag bunting. Everyone in an uplifted mood, lining the streets, day after day, enhanced by peachy weather. 1,000 miles of the route accomplished, and 7,000 miles to go.
The Torch reaches within 10 miles of 90% of the entire population. That's real participation. Very lucky to have the entourage pass right through the small town here. The TV wagon beams a live feed all day. Really a grand tour. Now, that would be something to follow by bike !
