Loops

Two options exist: Eagle Wind and Little Thompson Overlook

Eagle Wind is the more popular, longer lollipop loop. Little Thompson is an out and back that dead ends at a bench overlook over the Little Thompson river.

A good ride is to do a 2 or more loops on the Eagle Wind side, then cross over and do the Little Thompson Overlook before heading back to the car.

Trail Description

A gradual, relatively short (but very rocky) climb from the parking lot up a couple of switchbacks brings you to the first intersection. Going left up the rocky uphill takes you to the Little Thompson Overlook, but for this route you'll go right to the Eagle Wind Loop.

The loop climbs a little more before hitting the loop. Both clockwise and counterclockwise are good options, but I generally prefer to go right (counterclockwise) at the junction.

The trail is rocky, but not overly technical. A couple of short and steep climbs will keep you on your toes, and several rocks on the sides of the trail provide nice launching pads.

And watch out for rattlesnakes in the spring/summer months.

Getting There

From Boulder, travel north to Lyons on Highway 36. When you reach the intersection with Highway 66, take a right turn. Travel about a mile and then you'll make a left turn at the "Rabbit Mountain Open Space" sign.

The road will curve around for a little over a mile, before seeing the parking area on the right.

When to Bike

All season biking. Typically melts quickly in the winter, and can be quite hot in the summer.
