Overview
Onyx Peak 9113 feet sits high over the rugged eastern desert side of the San Bernardino Mountains. On it's tower crusted summit resides some of the oldest Junipers in all of Southern California. Also with the Junipers is four different species of pine, including a few rare Limber Pines. The summit has great views of the western Mojave and the rugged eastern slope of the San Bernardino Mountains. Onyz Peak is one of the few places in Southern California where riders can get a bike over nine thousand feet high. From the parking area for Onyx, on the west side of the road, is the start for Lightning Gulch Point which stands at 9465 feet A rider could continue from the summit of Lightning and descend to the west high saddle and hook up with the summit trail to Sugarloaf Mountain 9952 feet, the highest legal mountain bike accessible point in the San Bernardino Mountains.
Trail Description
Ride up the road and take the quick left. Ride up the rocky road for about 2 miles until a fork. Take the right road with a gate for another .5 miles. The summit can is at the most northern high tower complex.

If the gates are closed you can easily bypass them on the sides.Getting There
Take the I-10 through San Bernardino getting off on the Orange exit, also marked SR-38. Take SR-38 through the suburbs and up into the mountains for 40 miles. At 40 miles you will reach Onyx Summit 8443 feet with a dirt road leading off on the right. Park here without blocking the gate.When to Bike & External LinksOnyx Peak Summit is the highest paved road in Southern California and can sometimes be shut down in periods of heavy snow. The Onyx Peak road itself would make a interesting snow ride.
You will need a Adventure Pass to park anywhere along the route. Adventure Passes are available at the Mill Creek ranger station at the lower reaches of SR-38.
