OverviewThe Chimney Gulch trail starts at the base of Lookout Mountain and follows a set of switchbacks up the mountain, crossing the paved road several times as it makes its way to the top of Lookout Mountain.
The paved road to the top is a favorite among the road bike crew. At the top of Lookout Mountain, you'll find a visitor center as well as Buffalo Bill's grave. Oh and of course you'll be treated to some great views not only of Clear Creek Canyon, but also looking back east over the cityscape of Denver.Trail DescriptionThe trail starts with a short, flat section and then abruptly starts to climb. Some very tight, severe switchbacks will challenge your bike handling and climbing abilities to their limits. This steep section lasts a little less than a mile before giving way to a more gradual, rockier climb after you cross the paved road for the first time.
The trail is mostly non-technical, although there are several sections that are tough to clean on the way up. As you wind your way up the dirt trail, you'll gradually move from exposed trail to tree covered and shady terrain as you approach the visitor center.
Getting ThereFrom Denver, travel west to Golden on I-70 exiting on the Highway 6 exit. Follow Highway 6 to Lookout Mountain Road west of US 6 and roadside parking on US 6 eastbound from State Highway 58. When to BikeSpring, Fall and Summer. Winter months will likely have a considerable amount of residual snow, especially as you move higher up the trail. Images |
