Overview
Ellwood Beach and associated open space area is located in the beach town of Goleta in Santa Barbara County. Ellwood was until recently up for grabs to housing developers but a homegrown movement was able to stop this. Now Ellwood has protection and is a vital open space resource to the general public living in the Santa Barbara region. Ellwood also has a huge stand of eucalyptus trees that provide a stopping point for migratory monarch butterflies. The trail system of Ellwood is jumbled and confusing, it is a great place to ramble around with great views of the coastline, Channel Islands, and the Santa Ynez Mountains. The routes are great for cross country and cyclocross type riding styles. There are also a few unofficial dirt jump areas that provide some fun for freeriders. Ellwood also is a amazing place to watch sunsets, so try time outings around this time.
Trail Description Ellwood is basically a series a dirt road loops that link together with crossing single track. Basically riders find loops they like to connect to make into longer rides. The dirt jump park is near the golf course on the eastern part of Ellwood. Near the beach access path there is a series of cliff jumps. Near the eucalyptus groves there is a small slalom run and a series of jumps. There is truly endless possibilities except there is no long uphills or downhills. Getting ThereFirst Trailhead:
Take the Highway 101 to the Storke Road exit. Exit and turn left and continue over to Hollister then turn right. Then go to Coronado Drive which is one street past entrance and is signed. Turn left and park near the end. There is a hill with a big disply sign at the bottom with information about the monarch butterflies that seasonally come to the eucalyptus groves. The trail begins just pass the sign.
