Overview A fine mountain route to the top of England. A little pushing/carrying in places but a great route to tick. If the weather is good then the views are simply stunning at this height.
Trail Description Starting (508ft) in Glenridding car park(OS NY383643). Ride South along the main road towards Patterdale. Cross a small brook and take the lane on the right. This is a metalled road which changes into bridal path. This leads up to Grisdale Tarn past Ruthwaite Lodge (a climbing hut) a distance of approx 3.5 miles. Keep right of the tarn for a push up Dollywagon Pike along a steep path for just under a mile about 900ft of climbing. The trail levels out and then ride to the top of Helvellyn (3090ft) via Nethrmost Pike and some great views in all directions (if clear!). From the summit keep close to the steep east side and ride toward Raise (2882ft)being careful not to be funnelled to the west along trails and down to the Thirlmere Valley. At Raise enjoy the steep winding technical descent to a junction which is the start of Sticks Pass (OS NY34183 18187). Drop down this fantastic techical descent (approx 1000ft) into Glenridding Valley and back to the car park. In poor visibility keep to the right leaving Helvellyn north at Whiteside Bank or you could find yourself with a long ride home from Thirlmere! (Not too far to the right or you'll could find a very rapid descent!)
