Overview

Note: I will be adding photos to all Brian Head related pages in spring 2008 when the mountain biking park re-opens.

Dark Hollow Trail is one of two great downhill trails located at Brian Head Mountain Bike Park, the other being Bunker Creek. It starts at Brian Head Peak (11,307 feet) and starts descending almost right away - 5,000 feet over 13 miles. After the first mile the trail begins descending and is steep, rocky, and very technical. Some riders may even want to walk short portions. Views are beautiful as the trail passes through meadows and forests composed of aspen and spruce.

Dark Hollow is the most difficult trail at Brian Head Mountain Bike Park. Some consider it over-rated because it is very bone jarring. In 2004, local volunteers did a lot of hard work to rehab portions of the trail.

Shuttle service is available to take you back to Brian Head for $17.50 per person per trip, or you can arrange for your own shuttle.

Trail Description

The following information is courtesy of Brian Head Resort. Posted with permission.

Dark Hollow
Intermediate – 13 Miles

Ascending the Sidney Peaks Trail, you will go in about a mile, make a left on the Dark Hollow Trail. Hang on, as you will start descending right away. The trail leads to the edge of a plateau and a great viewpoint, then takes shoots you down into Munoz Meadow. Through the meadow you will come to the Hendrickson Lake, Paradise Springs junction. Go right toward Paradise Springs. You will soon come to the Second Left Hand Canyon Road, where you will again go left. Prepare your self for a beautiful downhill cruise, with a stream crossing, that will lead you to hwy 143. If you have arranged to meet the shuttle here, you can find some shade, and a stream to wait by. If your shuttle arrangements require that you meet in Parowan, use caution as you ride Hwy 143 down into town.

Here is a map of the route. Free maps are also available on-site.

Getting There

Park at the top of Brian Head Peak and take the Sidney Peaks trail. Go about a mile and make a left on the signed Dark Hollow Trail.

When to Bike

Summer and fall are best. Spring can be a great time if it isn't too wet. Summer thunderstorms are common and temperatures can be cool even in July and August.
