Overview
This is a short ride with some pros and cons. But there is no debate about Doctor's Gate descent. It is a 1000ft technical downhill which tests your riding skills and nerve. It is quiet. I met one person after doing two loops! He took the photo of me!
Trail Description
There are pros and cons for doing this trail.
Pros
Great technical downhill
30min of fun
Varied terrain
Challenging
Cons
Hard to loop with other trails
There is a 3.5mile road ride up the Snake Pass (very busy).
Getting through the main town (Glossop) is a nightmare because of severe traffic congestion.
1. Park on the outsirts of Glossop (OS SK 04880 9482) on a side road, on the right, opposite the pub as the main road starts to go up the Snake Pass (A57).
2. Head out on the A57 up towards Sheffield for 3.3miles. This will take you about 30min.
3. At the top, on the left, there is a sign post for the "Penine Way". This is leads to the main bridal path and cannot be ridden (access issues). It is only a 0.26 mile to walk.
4. After this on the left there is a way post marking the Doctor's Gate Path. Descend!!!
5. There are some muddy sections at the bottom but just follow the trail down and across a footbridge. The trail then follows the stream and climbs a little.
6. Follow the stone wall to the gate and drop down to the reservoir.
7. Turn left and over the stile. There is a short climb and back to the main road.
8. Repeat for more fun or turn right and drop down on the main road and back to the car.Getting ThereIf you have to get through Glossop go early or leave 'till late.
Glossop (OS SK03487 94078) is located on the edge of the Peak District where there is some great Mountain Biking. It is about 15 miles from Manchester in the NW of England.
When to Bike
This can be ridden any time. Be aware that weather can change rapidly even in the summer so take extra clothing especially waterproofs. Images |
