Passo di Vizze 2251m.: The Border between Italy and Austria |
Val di Vizze lies on the northermost part of Italy, on the border with Austria. This is a long (23km) and wild valley, surrounded by summits higher than 3000m, inviting to a peaceful rest looking at the panoramas.
Here some areas built up in the prehistory, tracks can be found in Burgstall and Gschleihboden. The valley became populated in the 6th and 7th centuries: the name Prati (place of the chief and main town) appears in official docunents starting from the year 1288.
Val di Vizze is one of the very few valley that kept undamaged all the original characteristics: here the host can find silence and restfullness and enjoy very fine walk ups with the wonderful panoramas of the Zillertal Alps.

To have a biking cross of the valley you must exit, from the Brennero Highway, at Sterzing/Vipiteno 948m.
Following the comfortable road up to S.Jakob/ S.Giacomo (1448m) and the steeper one above Wiesen you get the high part of the valley.
Now the road is almost flat till Stein wherefrom starts the old military gritty road . After about 10 km in middle steepness you get the Passo di Vizze wherefrom you can go, in Austria, down to Innsbruck.
Along the whole track the landscape is imposing and great on glaciers, snowfields, the huge massif of Gran Pilastro (3515m), the Croda Alta 3289m. and other minor (but fine) summits.
Here we are in the center of the Zillertal Alps, the mountains beloved by German and Austrian skiers.

Getting there How to get to Sterzing and surroundings
by car
The nearest exits are on the A22 Brennero motorway: Chiusa and Bressanone
* From Belluno drive along the S.S. 50 main road towards Trento, then continue along the S.S. 50 bis and the 47 as far as * Trento .From here continue along the S.S. 47 as far as you enter the A22 motorway. Exit at Chiusa and drive towards Bressanone and the other places of the Isarco Valley.
* From Venice enter the A4 motorway direction Brennero-Verona Nord via *Padova and * Vicenza, from Verona Nord continue along the A22 motorway, via *Verona, *Trento and *Bolzano, exit Chiusa or Bressanone.
* From Dobbiaco and *San Candido drive along the S.S. 49 as far as Rio di Pusteria. Here enter the A22 motorway, exit Chiusa or Bressanone. From here drive towards the localities of the Isarco Valley.
* From S. Martino di Castrozza drive along the S.S. 50 as far as Predazzo, continue along the S.S. 48 via Montagna as far as you enter the A22 motorway, exit Chiusa or Bressanone.

Intercity and Eurocity trains stop in Bressanone, Fortezza and Brennero stations, while the regional ones stop in Ponte Gardena, Chiusa and Vipiteno too.
Shuttle-bus services links the arrival railway stations to the tourist resorts.
