Overview

28W01 is located in the San Rafael Mountains in Santa Barbara County. The San Rafaels are the highest and most remote range in Santa Barbara. 28W01 ascends from Cachuma Saddle up around Cachuma Mountain and then to the high slopes of McKinley Mountain at 6200 feet. The road is well maintained and has amazing views of the most unspoiled mountain ranges in all of Southern California.

Trail Description

From the parking lot cross the road and ride up the gated fireroad due east. Ride up this fireroad for 2.25 miles where you round Cachuma Mountain on it's east slope. You have a option here of taking the firebreak to the quick summit of Cachuma, from the saddle it is .25 miles and 500 feet of gain. It is a steep firebreak that would be fun for downhillers. If you were only interested in doing Cachuma the roundtrip is 5 miles with 1600 feet of gain. To continue onto McKinley Springs is another 5 miles and 1400 feet of gain.

Getting There

From Santa Barbara take Highway 154 over San Marcos Pass and pass Lake Cachuma. Turn right onto Armour Ranch Road. After about 1.4 miles turn right onto Happy Canyon Road. Happy Canyon Road is a highly scenic route through ranchlands with large oaks. The road is mostly paved except for a few sections higher up. Drive 15 miles to the Ranger Station at Cachuma Saddle. Park in the large lot on your left.

When to Bike

The Happy Canyon Road and Figueroa Mountain Road see considerable closures due to adverse weather and fires.
