Overview The Gornergrat is a weatherstation on a ridge. You can go there by train. Beautiful view up there on the Gornerglacier and on many 4000m mountains.
The Gornergrat lies above the town of Zermatt. Here you can ride on several signed mountainbike trails. I can recommend it !!
Trail Description It's a very long downhill. The upper section is very hard with many rocks. Halfway there is a little climb of 175m of heighth. The last 2 kilometers to Zermatt is tarmac and further to Täsch you must take the tarmac road down. This is not a public road. Only used by people who have a permit. Mostly the trail is rocky or gravel. The trail is specially signed. You can't mis it. You must stay on the signed trail. The other roads are closed for mountainbikes. You may ride the other trails in midseason, but then there will be possibly snow up there. Getting There The Gornergrat lies above the town Zermatt.
How to get there :
1) From airport Geneve : Take the highway to Lausanne / Montreux / Sion / Sierre. Then go to Visp. There you follow the signs Zermatt. At the town Täsch you have to park your car because Zermatt is auto-free. Then you take the train to Zermatt (every 10-15 min.). Or you can go by bike on the road up to Zermatt (by train is more spectacular). In Zermatt you take the train to the Gornergrat. This station is directly on the other side of the road, you can't mis it. The ride up is a 45min. ride. Very spectacular !! You can buy a oneway-ticket and have to buy a special ticket for your bike.
2) From Zürich : Take the highway to Luzern. Then go to Interlaken. Then to Spiez en further to Kandersteg. Here you have to put your car on a train. This train will bring you on the otherside of the mountain (every 15min.). Here you take the road to Visp and further see route above.
3) From Basel : Take the highway to Bern. Then go to Spiez. Then see the route from Zürich.
When to BikeThe best season is in summer. Because in springtime and autumn there will be possibly snow on the Gornergrat. But maybe you can get out at a station earlier. First you have to enquiry at the touristoffice (close to the station in Zermatt). Be carefully for hikers. It's a very popular region for hikers. Images |
