Overview
The Berwyn Mountains are little known mountains situated east of the beautiful town of Llangollen in North Wales. Consequently they are very quiet and unspoilt and do not have a massive network of trails. There are a number of options when visiting and this out and back trail being a good taster to what the Berwyns are like.
Trail Description
Park the car on a small lane off the B4401 from Corwen (OS SJ04248 38474)
1. Head up the metalled road which is the startof the climb all the way to the top (2000ft climb).
2. After 1.4 miles it becomes a trail and passes alongside a wood and then out into open moorland.
3. The climb continues becoming rougher and more exposed. The trail can be seen to follow the contours for about 1 mile and rises to a dip between Cadair Bronwen(2544 ft) Cadair Berwyn (2707ft)at OS SJ 07568 34064.
4. There are not a lot of options now as the trails to both these summits are not bike trails but are fantastic and tempting!!
5. Back is down the way you came or a left fork off and down to the road and to the town Llandrillo. Turn right and up the B4401 and back to the car.Getting There
On the M56 motorway come off at junction 15 onto the M53. Follow this south and it becomes A55. Take the Wrexham road A483 leaving at the Ruabon exit and onto the A539 to Llangollen.
From Llangollen pick up the A5 to Corwen and then take a left turn on the B4401. Follow this for 3.5 miles to the lane on the left and park up. There is no car park so do not obstruct.When to BikeAnytime but summer is best. Take the usual precautions as with any mountain ride especially waterproofs as Wales in renouned for its rainfall!!
