Overview
The Peak District National Park is situated in the North West of England, the friendliest part of the country! There are two areas, the Dark Peak and the White Peak. There are numerous options for riding, Hayfield and the surrounding countryside offering numerous good mountain bike trails. This paticular route is short and fairly easy but will give you a good introduction to this great area. You can link, extend or cut short this ride.
Trail Description
Park the car in Hayfield at the head of the Sett Valley Trail.
1. Ride across the main A624 into Hayfield turn left and then sharp right onto a narrow road called Kinder lane. Proceed up the hill for about 0.2 miles and there is a left turn onto the Snake Path. This trail is between some stone cottages.
2. Ride up the Snake Path. This is a steep ascent and leads through three gates and onto open moorland.
3. Head out on the trail towards the white shooting cabin but turn righ before it and over the footbridge.
4. Drop down on the path and through heather moorland. this is a great downhill which eventually leads to the main road the A624. Turn right here and up to the top a distance of just over 0.5 miles.
5. At the top turn left onto a minor road, Monk's Road for 0.7 miles. Turn left and floow the metalled road round to the left and you will see a stone wall in front of you on the corner. Go through the gap here and ride the trail to the far edge of the field. Climb the wall and turn left onto the double track. Follow this down past the farm (Matleymoor Farm) and to a left turn. Do not turn left but turn immediately right through the gate into the field. Head diagonally left across the field and pick up a well made trail which is steep at the start. This traverses the side of Lantern Pike and is a fast downhill. Watch for walkers!
Drop down and the trail joins a minor road. Views across to Hayfield and a reservoir are excellent. Turn right and immediately left and follow the lane down to a road. Turn left and pick up the Sett Valley Trail, a disused railway track. This leads back into Hayfield where the car is parked.
This may be a short trail but it is a good ride and a lot of fun.Getting There
