Overview
The Beach Trail is the easiest singletrack route in the Little Horse Meadow area. Like the nearby Little Horse Trail, this trail runs primarily south from Osa Meadow. The first mile, which presents the most climbing on the route, can be eliminated by starting from its junction with NF Road 20S31.
This trail is an excellent introduction to Kern Plateau riding. Just about every type of riding is encountered on this route: packed pine duff, deep sand, meadow pack, gravel, and some tricky granite slabs. The way is mostly shaded with white and red fir, lodgepole pine, and jeffrey and ponderosa pine at the lower elevations. There are small meadows along much of the route with some amazing wildflower gardens.
Trail Description
From the start of the trail near Osa Meadow, the trail climbs a short, steep grunt, then drops a little and levels out through a meadowy lodgepole pine forest. A gradual climb follows, with the trail topping out at NF 20S31.
From this junction, the trail descends Beach Creek through more forest and meadow to NF 21S02 near Beach Meadow. The riding is mostly easy, but there are some tricky rock gardens and a few larger slabs to negotiate.
Getting ThereFollow directions on the Kern Plateau page for getting to the Blackrock Ranger Station on the Sherman Pass Road. All directions here are relative to that point.
From Blackrock Ranger Station, the top of the trail can be reached by heading north on NF 21S03 7 miles to NF 20S25, which branches to the left (west). Follow NF 20S25 to Osa Meadow, where the Beach Trail branches to the left (west) at a signed junction.
The bottom of the trail can be reached by heading west (and northwest) from Blackrock Station on NF 21S02 5.5 miles, past a signed turn-off for Beach Meadow. The trail (signed) will be on the right.
