Overview
This is a mountain ride to remember. Cadair Idris is situated in stunning Mid Wales which is much quieter than North Wales but no less beautiful. We met three people on this day ride! Cadair Idris stands at a height of 2916ft with magnificant views of the surrounding countryside, lakes and peaks if you get a clear day.Trail Description
1. Park near the village of Abergynolwyn (SH67152 08874 at 85ft) and head out on a narrow road up hill with the small river on the left.
2. After 1.28 miles you reach a junction with a phonebox. Turn right and carry along the narrow lane for 0.8 miles. Go straight across the T junction at Llanfihangel y pennant.
3. Continue over the Afon(river) Cadair and bear right and the road eventually runs out into a double track dirt road. Now the climbing begins!
4. Follow this track up for 1.6 miles where it turns into a grassy climb. After 1.25 miles turn right. There is an obvious route up some paveed to prevent erosion. This doesn't spoil the ride at all!
5. The trail gets steeper here and continues to the summit with a bit of a scramble to the trig point and the views!
6. The way down is the reverse. It's fast!
Getting There
From Dolgellau take the A470 east for 1.72 miles. Then take the A487 south for 4 miles to Minffordd. Turn right onto the B4405 past Tal-Y-Llyn Lake on the right. Proceed for 3.68 miles to Abergynolwyn and turn right onto a narrow road and over the river. Parking is near a cafe. When to Bike
Biking can be at any time of the year but there needs to be special care in the winter months. Take the usual precautions as with any high mountain ride. Waterproofs, maps, food, water, survival blanket etc. All Photos were taken by Mike. Images |
