Overview

Quite possibly my favorite trail in the Buffalo Creek area. I prefer to ride it from west to east, ending up on (closed) FR 543. Fast, rolling track through one of the burned areas,

it loops around Baldy Peak and intersects with Miller Gulch (also old closed FR), and Homestead Trail (my other favorite trail in the area).

Trail Description

You have to ride in on FR543 (closed), AKA South Buffalo Creek Road for about .5 mile to pick up the east end. From there on out, it is exclusively singletrack, consisting of Pikes Peak decomposed granite.

Getting There

To get to FR543 and either end of the trail, follow previous (Buffalo Creek Area) directions to the FS station right off of 126. Head north across the bridge, then head west on the road about .5 miles to the east access. Or continue on to the next east access. I prefer to ride all the way up to Baldy Trail 727 or Gashouse Gulch 726, then uphill north to Miller Gulch, then east on either Miller Gulch or Homestead, then pick up Sandy Wash, descending back out to the FS station. Awesome loop.

When to Bike

Usually accessible from mid-March to mid-November, storm dependent. This trail dries out quickly after rain/snow. The road also gets plowed, since people live along it.

Little shade exists, so mid-day sun exposure can be brutal and intense (sunscreen, anyone?)

Links & Other info

The Front Range Mountain Bike Patrol patrols the area in conjunction with the Forest Service, and are always looking for more volunteers to help.

The Forest Service has good info HERE.
