OverviewShinglemill is a recently reworked trail that connects FR 543 with the Colorado Trail. It is of similar gain and distance as Morrison Creek. Neither is really better than the other for up or down. Morrison is slightly longer, and therefore a tiny bit less steep. Shinglemill is more out in the open, so it is more exposed to the sun.
Trail DescriptionBroken, loose PPG, dirt, and all singletrack once off of 543. Upon merging with the CT, it is again all singletrack. Fast downhill, is is mostly devoid of any obstacles, other than little dips where it crosses drainages. Super fun descent from the CT down to 543. Once on 543, you can choose options to re-gain your elevation, unless you have set up a shuttle from the FS station.Getting TherePark at the FS station, ride 543 in about 3 miles, look for the signage on your left (uphill) side.
There is also a small TH (5 cars?) along FR 550 that I believe is free parking. You can pick up the CT from here, or descend north through some really fun spots to where the trail splits to become Morrison Creek/Shinglemill.
When to BikeThe usual info for the area - hot in midday sun, hot in the summer. I've been stuck in an amazing afternoon thunderstorm or two in the area. Images |
