OverviewA nice park near Aspen Park, this is another JCOS park property. The trails are generally non-technical, but with a fair amount of gain. When the trails are tacky and not powdery, you can make some seriously wicked turns at a good clip here. There are a few spots where you can select a line for a nice rock drop, one of the few found in JCOS parks.
Trail DescriptionSingletrack with an old fire-road access. This area was going to be a private ski area. Yes, you read that right.
From JCOS:
Owl's Perch Trail At trailhead parking area 0 .5 mi +167' / -102' Pleasant trail that loops around the picnic area.
Lodgepole Loop Trail Trail junction w/ Owl's Perch Trail 1.2 mi +194' / -197' Shady, heavily forested trail.
Sunny Aspen Trail West trail junction w/ Lodgepole Loop 0.8 mi 263' / -289' Trail with aspen groves that lead to a picnic shelter.
Old Ski Run Trail Trail junction w/ Sunny Aspen Trail 1.3 mi +632'/-327' Trail covers highest point on park with great views to the northwest.
I like to ride figure 8 loops in the park. Usually doing 2 loops is enough to give me my mileage and gain for the ride.
Getting ThereFrom JCOS:
Located on Route 285 approximately 1/2 mile east of Aspen Park, Colorado.
The parking lot is on the south side of 285, but you have to exit on the north side if you are heading west bound. Overflow parking exists on the north side (and horse trailer parking), but I've never seen it full. When to BikeThe usual weekend warrior traffic exists. Evenings are generally calm, mostly reserved for hikers, it seems.
The north slopes just above the parking lot get a lot of sledding traffic after snowstorms. The trails can hold their snow, being north facing, from December-April, depending on snowfall. Links & Other infoJCOS Page
