OverviewMarjan hill is situated on the western part of Split city peninsula. Covered by dense pine forest, it is actually a huge park where many locals seek relax by waking, running, cycling, free climbing etc... Its highest point, Telegrin, rises 178m above deep blue sea.
I will describe here an interesting trail over hill's ridge. Logical start for this is Vidilica, a gazebo on eastern side. We're climbing up Telegrin and descending to Marjan westernmost point, Institute of Oceanography, over a walking path.
Trail DescriptionStart with enjoying view to center of Split city. Paved promenade is climbing steep up to church of Sv. Nikola, where macadam begins. After 200 m turn right to steep paved ascent again and after done don't go on the road, follow it left to stairway up to Telegrin, top of Marjan. I've chosen here not to take road up to it, but try to ascend as much possible on singletrack left of stairway, which is on parts rough so you have to carry the bike maybe 10-15 meters. You'll soon see an unpaved road and take its left wing, which will lead you just below Marjan's summit. Instead of continuing down by asphalt road, after 100 meters take trail to the left, which is shown on the first photo.
Here starts your descent. First part starts with no altitude loss, you even gain a bit, here don't miss Girometta memorial (second photo), on the left just when you start steeper descent to Marjan saddle. There you will shortly ride on asphalt, but instead of following it you will continue straight into forest and down to the Institute. Trail is pretty pleasant, not so hard, specially the first part, second is bit steeper and rougher with some minor stone gardens. It's free of obstacles at the moment of writing, although trees sometimes fall over the trail from strong winds, so you'll have to carry bike over it. Rangers clean that within few months.
If you like fast cross country ride which will shake your hands well this is the right trail for you, a good thing for having a sense of downhill riding as well.
Getting ThereUse the city map to get to Vidilica. There is a small, always taken parking place. Cars can't go further than this. When to BikeAll the year long, although ascent can be a torture during summer if you are weak to heat. Images |
