Overview

Town Run Trail Park is a 127-acre natural resource park in Indianapolis, Indiana. The facility is owned by Indy Parks and Recreation and was made possible through donations from Martin Marietta Aggregates, Mr. Oliver Dougherty, and R.N. Thompson Associates Inc. It is located near the White River on East 96th Street between Keystone Avenue and Allisonville Road. The main attraction at the park is a singletrack mountain bike trail which opened in 1999 as the city's first official mountain bike trail. The 7.5 mile course is maintained by the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association. It offers a variety of terrain but is known for its flowing, roller-coaster like singletrack that can be enjoyed by novices and seasoned riders alike.

Trail Description

Section 1 (Parking Lot to I-465 Bridge)

The trail runs south along the east side of the river. It is heavily wooded and includes several short uphills and downhills.

Section 2 (South Loop)

The terrain here is split between forest and open prairie. Trail surface varies from hard-packed clay to sand.

Section 3 (I-465 Bridge to Parking Lot)

The trail winds its way northward on the west side of Section 1 and back to the parking lot. It is considered a bit more technical and includes features such as cement blocks and off-camber bench cuts.

Trail Conditions

The latest trail conditions are posted on the HMBA Town Run Trail Park Forum.

Hours

The park opens at dawn and closes at dusk.

Closings

Observe closed park entrance gate and/or closing signs posted at the park entrance or at the trailhead. Avoid riding when there is standing water and/or your tires are leaving an imprint on the trail surface for a significant stretch.

Weather

It is a good idea to check the NWS Forecast, NWS Storm Total Precipitation, and NWS White River Hydrograph before planning a ride. Town Run Trail Park is located on a flood plain. The lowest trail elevation is at the 9' level of the White River. It typically takes two sunny days for the trail to dry after the river recedes to a level below 9'. During the winter, the area is subject to freeze-thaw cycles that leave the trail vulnerable during the middle and later parts of the day. The generally accepted rule is to avoid riding the trail when there is standing water and/or your tires are leaving an imprint on the trail surface for a significant stretch.
