Overview

543 is now a closed forest service road. It is now used exclusively by the people that own property along Buffalo Creek, and it is also (thankfully) used by the Forest Service for wildland fire fighting and for emergency response.
Along 543.
You cannot park along the creek, even though it seems like you should be able to, your taxes paying for it and all. If you do park along the road, you will get a "friendly reminder" ticket, presumably from the "friendly" residents.

While not particularly enjoyable to ride, it is not too bad, and it connects nicely with all of the trails along the road: Sandy Wash, Gashouse Gulch, Morrison Creek, Shinglemill, Tramway, and it also connects to FR 550, which is the Buffalo TH and also connects to Redskin Creek Trail.

Trail Description

Fire road double track. Don't expect anything fun. But it works.

Getting There

See main page for the Buffalo Creek area. Best place to park is the FS station at the creek crossing on the SE corner of 126 & Buffalo Creek.

EDIT 8/4/08 - There is a new parking area on the south side of 543 about .25 miles in off of 126, sponsored by North Fork Fire Protection District. This will help the parking situation at the FS office. While it doesn't really save any riding per se, it does keep you from having to cross 126 twice on your bike (to and from 543). Thanks, NFFPD!

When to Bike

Note that this road does not get plowed during the winter unless the residents that live along the road plow it. If you can't ride the road with the snow, I promise you won't be able to ride the trails accessed off the road anyway.

Otherwise, same seasonal info as main page.
