OverviewI believe this is an old railway bed that was purchased by a group of private individuals and created as a green space for the enjoyment of the public. It follows a creek that flows from Penn Yan on Keuka Lake to Dreden on Seneca Lake.
Trail DescriptionThe best place to start is at the trail head just beyond the Mr Twistee ice cream shop near the junction of routes 14 and 54. There is parking, a picnic table, and a bike rack at the trail head. The trail continues at a slight upgrade for 4.9 miles and ends in the center of the town of Penn Yan. There are a number of trailheads along the way, and the trail crosses a number of roads. There are old railroad bridges, and a number of places to either swim in the creek, or picnic along the way.
This is a very easy trail, and not very technical, but a great beginner ride, and great scenery as it passes by old mills through the heart of the Finger Lakes.Getting ThereNY State Route 14 runs along the western side of Seneca Lake and is accesible from the NY State Thruway, an alternate route from the south is to come up from Interstate Hwy 86 (also known as 15/17) to State Route 54, travel through Hammondsport along the eastern side of Keuka Lake and into Penn Yan.When to BikeSpring, Summer, and Fall are all great times for biking. Beware of hunters in the fall, where bright clothing!
Haven't biked this in the winter, but there are signs up that say snow mobiles are allowed in winter, but not inside the town of Penn Yan. |
