Loop over Poręba GórnaThis is a little circuit which goes through few villages of the North of Gorce and shows few nice pittoreque villages. 3h required. Trail Description
Some parts of this circuit are on the road, others on wide track. This doesn't go until the top of any mountain so it is not very hard. The circuit can be modified in many ways since there is a number of cyclable tracks in the area.
From Rabka where you park in front of the supermarket/thermal resort (and bike shop), continue along the main street going East (blue/black marks). When the blue separates (not very visible) in a street on the left, follow it. It goes up for a little while before reaching a wide flat meadow. In this place you might find different marks, as there was apparently a differnt marking few yeras ago.
There is a 90° turn on the right, and after passing few houses and farms, follows a long descent on a narrow asphalt road.
You go down until Olszówka.
In Olszówka, turn right and cycle up for few meters, before taking a track goig up on on the left side, still following the blue marks.
You pass a little pass named "Stawiska", and go down again via an asphalt road until the other village of Niedźwiedź.
In Niedźwiedź, take to main road going up the whole village, passing few old nice wooden houses, and reaching the upper part of the village, Poręba Górna.
At the upper bus top of Poręba Górna stops the asphalt and the road divides into two trails going left and right. The right one is marked with green and yellow marks (the green being more visible than the yellow). Few hundreds of meters later are some tricky places where you might have to step down and push the bike for a short while. Later, you reach an asphalt road gently going down, passing few beautiful farms.
Panoramas are wide, landscapes beautiful, you see the whole north side of the Gorce range.
Later, the road goes down, but the marks leave it on the left very brutally, few meters after you pass a christian cross on the left side. Be prepared and have the small bracket on to cycle up. A rude ascent follows, but soon followed by a flat track. Lots of up and downs anyway, and some obstacles to avoid (not a well maintained track, lots of potholes filled with mud and water).
Later on, the track starts to go down progressively, and a fine descent into the forest takes you back to the wide meadow seen in the beginning of this trail; you just need to return back to Rabka.
This circuit is perhaps best made in the opposite direction, to avoid the steepest parts (and having the asphalted sections more often located on the parts going up). I did it in this sense only as weather seemed to be rainy at the start, before improving unexpectedly.
Getting ThereThere are a lot of places in which you can park in Rabka, but sometimes not free. Drive east in the street on the blue trail, there you'll find pleinty of free spaces in front of villas.
Rabka is located south from Krakow, half-way to Zakopane. Images |
