Overview
This route is a slight variation on another one which I have written. Here we climb up the Snake Path to the shooting cabin and then peel off to the right descending to Kinder Reservoir nestled beneath Kinder Downfall. The views across the moor land are breathtaking and have a character all of their own in this part of the Peak District. We link back up with the familiar Jacob’s Ladder route where decisions can be made!
Trail Description
Park the car in Hayfield at the head of the Sett Valley Trail.
1. Ride across the main A624 into Hayfield turn left and then sharp right onto a narrow road called Kinder Lane. Proceed up the hill for about 0.2 miles and there is a left turn onto the Snake Path. This trail is between some stone cottages.
2. Ride up the Snake Path. This is a steep ascent and leads through three gates and onto open moorland.
3. Head out on the trail towards the white shooting cabin but turn right before it and dropping down towards Kinder Reservoir.
4. Turn right at the wall and follow the cobbled path down the road. Turn immediately left up a narrow track which climbs steeply towards another road.
5. Go straight across and through the gate got a grassy slope. Keep climbing and following the trail with the Wood On the left. Keep climbing gently on open moorland. Note Kinder Downfall on the left.
6. Pass through the gate and turn right onto singletrack with a dry stone wall on your left. Follow the well marked trail for about 0.6 miles after which, it joins the main trail to Edale (down Jacob's Ladder) at Oaken Clough.
7. Now here there are a number of options. You can continue up and descend down Jacob's Ladder and follow the route round up Chapel Gate Track and background as described in Hayfield Jacobs Ladder route. You could shorten the route by just turning right and heading back to Hayfield. You could climb and then descend to the foot of Jacobs Ladder, turn round, climb back up and then descend back to Hayfield via the Pennine Bridle Path!
8. For the purposes of this trail we turn left and climb past Edale cross and then descend the top of Jacobs Ladder. Then turn round and retrace our steps back to Hayfield via the Pennine Bridle Path. This gives us some superb downhill sections and is good if you're short on time.
9. The whole thing is about 8.5 miles.
Getting There
From Manchester head along the A6 to Stockport. Keep on this road through Hazel Grove, Disley to Newtown. Turn left on the A6015 to New Mills and out towards Birch Vale and Hayfield. Park the car in the Sett Vale Trail car park. There is a fee - £3 per day.
When to Bike
Biking is year round but more fun in summer and if there has been a dry spell. However it does seem to be well drained at present. Ice and snow can be a problem in winter but shouldn't stop the fun unless it is deep! Take the usual precautions when MTBing. Images |
