Overview

Towering Above

Chapel is a small trail located in Sedona, Arizona. Chapel is just one of many trails in the area that can be connected and customized to ones own wants to form the perfect ride. Chapel can be combined with Broken Arrow Trail, Mystic, and Little Horse to form a very nice loop. Like many of the other trails in the area, Chapel boasts a few pretty technical sections along with a few slick-rock portions. Also, just a warning, this trail has some of the most amazing views in Sedona.

Chapel of the Holy Cross

The name "Chapel" comes from the Chapel of the Holy Cross, which lays at the north end of the trail. This is a very popular attraction in Sedona, partly because of the BIG views and just the location of the chapel. On most weekends, the chapel will be packed with visitors.

Trail Description

The Begining

Single Track

South to North-Chapel begins off of Little Horse (1.1 mile from Bell Rock Pathway and .4 miles from Broken Arrow Trail). From here, the trail runs north and skirts along sheer sandstone faces. For the entire length, the trail is a single track. The trail starts out easy enough with a little bit of elevation gain. For the most part, this trail undulates the entire way with no great amount of elevation gain. About a quarter of the way through the ride you will go across a few large slick-rock sections.

Back Down the Trail

On the Trail

Keep skirting the side of the mountains. Pretty soon, as you look down the trail and see what looks to be a chapel arising-keep heading towards it. The last quarter part of this ride is the hardest. The trail becomes increasingly rock and steep. The single track gets narrower with fairly sharp turns. Also, you're biggest hazard in this section are the visitors to Chapel of the Holy Cross. Be-aware that they could be there taking a little hike. The trail finishes up in the Chapel of the Holy Cross's parking lot. From here, you should think about heading to Mystic.

Trail Overview

My Emmitt Barks Map calls Chapel a "moderate ride" and describes it as a "Short trail below Twin Buttes that leads to Chapel of the Holy Cross".

When to Bike

Thee Bike

You can bike this trail year round. However, summer months can be really really hot. If you were to ride in the summer, be sure to do it early in the morning. In the winter, Sedona does receive snow too, which would make for an interesting ride. Fall and spring are the best times to ride.

Getting There

Some Good Views

From Sedona Head South on Arizona 179.

One way to get to this trail would be to take a left onto Chapel Road from AZ 179. Follow it till you reach the Chapel of the Holy Cross. The trail-head is on the right side of the parking lot. The only reason why I would use this trail head was if I didn't have a Red Rock Pass because I don't think you need it here. It isn't the best spot to start on a ride in my opinion. The other options would be to start on Bell Rock Pathway or Broken Arrow Trail. Those are better trail heads. See those pages for "Getting There" descriptions.
