Overview
Nestled in the heart of the Flathead valley in northwestern Montana is Whitefish Mountain Resort. Recently renamed and still known to the locals as The Big Mountain, Whitefish Mountain Resort boasts over 2,300 feet in elevation gain from its base to the main summit and has over 20 miles of dedicated mountain bike terrain.
With incredible views of Whitefish Lake, the Flathead Valley, the Whitefish Range and spectacular views into Glacier National Park a trip to the Whitefish Mountain Resort is a must.
All levels of difficulty are available from beginner to expert.
Photos of the trails will be added after the mountain opens this summer.Trail DescriptionThe most well known trail at the Whitefish Mountain Resort is the Big Mountain Summit Trail.
The Big Mountain Summit Trail is a roundtrip total of 16 miles in length of single track. Total elevation gain is over 2,300 feet. Initially it winds through trees and eventually opens to ridges which provide vistas into the mountainous areas and valley lakes of northwestern Montana. This is truly a beautiful ride. The downhill is enjoyable as well.
The Resort also provides a skills terrain park which includes: ladders, a table top, giant berms, and a step-down.
A chair lift option is available for those who are only interested in the 8 mile trip down the Mountain. Cost for a the lift is $7.
Bike rentals are available through Snow Ghost Outfitters located in the Whitefish Mountain Village. Call 406-862-1996 for more information. Their hours of operation are daily from 9am to 5pm.

Helmets Only $5/dayGetting ThereThe Resort trails are located 8 miles north of Whitefish, Montana.
By Car: Whitefish is on Montana Highway 93.
By Air: Northwest Montana is served by Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell, Montana. Don't let the international fool you it is a small airport. Whitefish is a 20 minute drive from the airport.
By Rail: Regular Amtrack service stops right in Whitefish at the base of the mountain. Service comes both directions from Seattle and Minneapolis.

Other Trip Highlights: Make sure to pencil enough time into your visit to spend a few days in Glacier National Park. The Crown of the Continent is located approximately 35 miles west of Whitefish on Highway 2. Many cyclists ride up the Going-to-the-Sun Highway, it will certainly be a highlight of your trip.
During full moons many cyclists enjoy the "Moonlight Ride" from Logan Pass down the Going-to-the-Sun Highway. The Park Service recommends that a headlight and helmet be used.
Restrictions are in place for cycling sections of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, from June 15 through Labor Day:
Bicycles are prohibited from Apgar Campground to Sprague Creek Campground between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
East-bound bicycle traffic is prohibited between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Logan Creek to Logan Pass.
Approximate time requirements are 3 hours from Logan Creek to Logan Pass and 45 minutes to ride from Sprague Creek to Logan Creek.
When to BikeThere is nothing better than summer in northwestern Montana! Cool nights and mild summer days enable recreationers to fully enjoy all that summers in Montana have to offer. The resort opens for summer season on June 20 and closes on September 3.
The Mountain also offers numerous other activities.
