indicating the extent of the piece you put in? How do you get it all the way down if it is a tight fit and the hammer is only useful at the beginning?

Yep, the position of the part. Before I did it, it was all mystery. I was afraid the part would fall at the bottom due to wider diameter and being unable to get it back. Or, opposite, not managing to get it till the level I was seeking. Surprisingly all went fine, it moved down smoothly, I had to hit gently the iron tube I used as a burin. Near the position I seeked it went harder and harder, but it reached it at the right moment. I think I had a great intuition and above all I was very lucky it went all fine.
